Waymo recalls 3,791 robotaxis over flooding software flaw after Central Texas incidents; permanent fix still outstanding

Source: TechCrunch

Waymo recalled 3,791 robotaxis equipped with its 5th and 6th Generation Automated Driving Systems after a software defect caused vehicles to slow down and then proceed into standing water on higher-speed roadways. Waymo reported the defect to NHTSA on May 1, 2026; NHTSA acknowledged the recall in a letter dated May 11, following a series of flooding incidents in Central Texas including a San Antonio storm in which a rider-empty Waymo robotaxi was swept away. All 3,791 affected vehicles received an interim software update by April 20, 2026, alongside tighter weather-related restrictions and updated navigation maps; NHTSA's letter flagged that Waymo has not yet provided a permanent fix and required Waymo to submit eight consecutive quarterly status reports followed by three annual reports under the federal recall framework.
