A burglar used a Waymo to steal yoga clothes in San Francisco — and got away with it

A January 2026 burglary at San Francisco's Hot 8 Yoga studio, in which the suspect arrived and fled by Waymo, remains unsolved after the company's ride footage was deleted before police filed an April search warrant and exterior camera footage Waymo retained was blurred for privacy. Account information Waymo provided in response to the warrant did not identify the suspect, per a San Francisco Chronicle report.

Why it matters

Waymo has spent two years fighting the "rolling surveillance machine" framing, and this case is the cleanest public data point yet on what its retention policy actually looks like in practice. Ride footage was gone within roughly three months, exterior cameras were blurred at the source, and the account-level KYC was thin enough that a warrant returned nothing actionable. That is a deliberate product choice, not a gap.

For operators, the read-through is twofold. Robotaxi fleets are converging on a privacy posture closer to a transit agency than a rideshare app, which removes a liability surface (subpoena volume, civil discovery, data breach exposure) but also removes a marketing line competitors like Tesla have leaned on with "cameras everywhere." Expect this to become a regulatory pressure point: SFPD getting stonewalled on a yoga heist is the kind of anecdote that ends up in a city council hearing, and the CPUC and state AGs will notice. The fleets that survive the next rule-making cycle will be the ones that can document retention windows in writing before someone legislates one for them.
