1X opens NEO pre-orders at $20,000 with teleoperation explicitly disclosed as part of the consumer rollout

1X Technologies opened pre-orders for NEO on October 28, 2025, positioning the bipedal home humanoid as the first consumer-direct robot of its kind: $20,000 Early Access (or $499/month subscription) with a $200 deposit, first U.S. shipments slated for 2026 and international expansion in 2027. Unlike Tesla's prior framing of comparable demonstrations as autonomous, 1X CEO Bernt Børnich explicitly disclosed that NEO will rely on remote human teleoperators for complex household tasks the on-device autonomy cannot yet handle, with the company framing teleoperation as the deliberate strategic path to consumer rollout rather than a stop-gap.

Why it matters

NEO is the consumer-direct test case for the verified-vs-claimed pattern that Tesla's We, Robot event made canonical seven months earlier. The shipped capability is the same in both cases. Humanoids do useful work today by combining on-device autonomy with remote human operators. The difference is the framing. Tesla showed teleoperated demonstrations and described them as autonomous; 1X explicitly named the teleoperation in the launch materials and Børnich went on the record with "we hope to ship a mostly fully autonomous robot in 2026, but chose to not promise anything that does not already work today." Two operator strategies for one product-stage reality.

The market reception split predictably. Engadget's headline foregrounded the teleoperation ("a $20,000 home robot that will learn chores via teleoperation"), and skeptical creator-side coverage characterized the product as paying for "a robot that occasionally needs tech support from a human wearing a VR headset." For operators tracking consumer humanoid deployment, NEO is the cleanest data point yet on whether a transparent teleoperation-bridged product can find willing buyers at the $20K consumer price. The Hayward factory 1X opened in April 2026, which 1X calls "America's first vertically integrated humanoid robot factory," signals 1X's bet that the answer is yes. The next operator question is whether the disclosure pattern survives contact with mass-market consumer expectations once units ship.
