Shift, an AI training data startup, is offering free home cleanings in New York in exchange for first-person camera footage captured by a camera-equipped hat worn by the cleaner, with the data used to train household robots. The company says expansions to San Francisco, London, Zurich, and Munich are coming "very soon," and that it already pays tens of thousands of people across 15 countries to record activities through its app.

Why it matters

The interesting number Shift is not disclosing is the implicit price per hour of egocentric household data. A NYC deep clean runs roughly $150 to $250 for two to three hours; if Shift is willing to eat that cost in exchange for ego-view footage in dirty, cluttered, real homes, that puts a floor on what household manipulation data is worth right now to whoever is buying. For reference, Scale and Surge pay $20 to $40 per hour for staged kitchen demonstrations. Shift is paying roughly 3 to 5x that for unstaged environments, which tells you where the bottleneck actually is for humanoid and home-robot training: not annotation, but distribution into private homes.

The structural play is the recruiting funnel. Shift already pays "tens of thousands" of contributors across 15 countries through its app, and the cleaning offer is a customer acquisition channel for households, not cleaners. Operators building home robots (1X, Figure, Weave, Physical Intelligence) need exactly this kind of long-tail residential data and have no clean way to source it themselves without consent headaches. Watch whether Shift signs an exclusive with a humanoid OEM or stays horizontal like Scale did. The plumbing, cooking, and construction expansion telegraphs the latter.

Figure signed a commercial agreement with Catalyst Brands to deploy humanoid robots across the retailer's distribution network, starting at a distribution center in Reno, Nevada. Catalyst Brands is the holding company for JCPenney, Aéropostale, and Brooks Brothers.

Why it matters

Catalyst is Figure's first publicly named retail logistics customer outside the BMW manufacturing pilot, and the choice of site matters more than the brand list. Reno is the standard western US e-commerce fulfillment node (Amazon, Walmart, Thredup all run hubs there), which means whatever throughput Figure proves at JCPenney's DC translates directly into pitches for the next twenty contracts. Apparel distribution is also the easier end of the humanoid manipulation problem: soft goods, polybags, totes, not mixed-case grocery.

The number to watch is units on the floor, not the press release. Figure claims one robot per hour off the BotQ line and 350+ Figure 03s built to date, so Catalyst could plausibly absorb 50 to 100 units across the network without straining supply. If the Reno deployment stays at single-digit robots through 2026, this is a data-collection deal dressed as a commercial one (Helix needs the operational hours). If it scales to a full shift replacement at one DC, that is the first real humanoid unit-economics datapoint in US retail logistics.

Figure AI says its BotQ facility has scaled Figure 03 production from one unit per day to one unit per hour in under 120 days, with more than 350 third-generation robots and over 9,000 actuators across 10+ SKUs built to date. The company reports a 99.3% first-pass yield on its battery line and over 80% first-pass yield on full robots, supported by 150+ networked workstations, 50+ in-process inspection points, and 80+ end-of-line tests.

Why it matters

One unit per hour is roughly 7,000 to 8,000 robots a year at single-shift, which would put Figure ahead of every Western humanoid competitor on installed base if the line holds yield. The number that matters more than throughput is the 80% first-pass yield on full robots and 99.3% on batteries. Most humanoid programs are still rework shops, where every unit gets torn down and re-flashed before it ships. Crossing 80% first-pass is the threshold where bill-of-materials cost stops being theoretical and you can actually quote a customer a price.

The quieter signal is the 9,000 actuators across 10+ SKUs. Figure is vertically integrating the actuator stack rather than buying from Harmonic Drive or Nabtesco, which is the same playbook Tesla ran on motors and the Chinese humanoid OEMs are running off the EV supply chain. For operators evaluating humanoid vendors in 2026, the question is no longer demo quality. It is who can ship 1,000 units against a PO, and who controls their own actuator line when the next bottleneck hits.
